Late TD Lifts Cardinals Past Cowboys
St. Louis -- QB Jim Hart tossed a 31-yard TD pass to Dave Williams with 4:48 left in the game to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 17-10 opening day win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys got on the scoreboard quickly. Charlie Pittman fumbled while returning the opening kickoff and Dallas DB Cliff Harris recovered at the St. Louis 26. Four plays later, Mike Clark kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Cowboys a 3-0 lead.
MacArthur Lane struck back for St. Louis midway through the first period when he broke through the line and scored a TD on a 62-yard romp to put the Cardinals on top, 7-3. Jim Bakken added a 27-yard field goal with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter to give St. Louis a 10-3 lead as the period ended.
Dallas evened the score, 10-10, in the second quarter when Cornell Green picked off a Jim Hart pass and QB Roger Staubach capitalized by tossing a 14-yard TD pass to TE Mike Ditka. Staubach, who started in place of injured QB Craig Morton, showed impressive scrambling skills that highlighted his college career with Navy. He led all Cowboys rushers with 82 yards on 11 carries. But Staubach struggled some with his passing game, completing only 6-of-16 passes for 73 yards. He was also sacked five times. The Cowboys did have a chance to take a lead before the half ended, driving to the St. Louis 38 yard-line. But Mike Clark missed the 45 yard field goal attempt as time expired.
After the intermission, the defenses took control and the Cowboys and Cardinals spent most of the second half trading punts. Midway through the fourth quarter, Jim Hart found some big-play magic, connecting on a 46 yard pass to John Gilliam before tossing the 31-yard go-ahead TD to Dave Williams.
