Cowboys thump Packers, 27-7
Green Bay -- Quarterback Craig Morton returned from injury to the Dallas starting lineup and led the Cowboys to a 27-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. Morton completed 10-of-14 passes for 141 yards and tossed a 31-yard TD pass to "Bullet" Bob Hays in the first quarter. The Dallas defense forced four Green Bay turnovers and linebacker Lee Roy Jordan scored when he scooped up a Bart Starr fumble caused by a Jethro Pugh sack and rumbled 30 yards into the endzone during the second period.
Things looked favorable for the Packers early. On the Cowboys' first drive, punter Ron Widby mishandled a snap and was tackled by Ray Nitschke giving the Packers the ball at the Dallas 34. Green Bay drove to the Dallas 18 before stalling, but then kicker Dale Livingstone missed a 25-yard chip shot. The Cowboys then took possession at their own 20 and drove 80 yards, taking a 7-0 lead on the Morton to Hayes TD pass. After that, the rout was on as the Cowboys went on a 20-0 scoring run.
Trailing 27-0 late in the final quarter, Bart Starr prevented Green Bay from being held scoreless for the second week in a row when he connected with Carroll Dale on a 40-yard TD pass with 1:46 left in the game. The Cowboys even their record to 1-1 while the Packers drop to 0-2.
