Falcons Edge Giants, 21-17
Atlanta -- Behind the hard running of back Jim "Cannonball" Butler and
the efficient passing of quarterback Bob Berry, the Atlanta Falcons
defeated the New York Giants in their home opener, 21-17, to improve to
2-0 in the NFC Eastern division. Butler gained 76 yards on the ground
and scored a touchdown while Berry completed 16-of-23 passes for 241
yards and also tossed a TD pass.
The Falcons' defense clamped down on former Michigan All-American
running back Ron Johnson. After spending last season with the Cleveland
Browns, the big back only managed to gain 18 yards on 13 carries for the
Giants. The only highlights for Johnson was leading the Giants with
six reception for 58-yards and scoring on a two-yard TD run in the first
quarter that put New York on the scoreboard. The only real offense for
the Giants was generated by QB Fran Tarkenton, who completed 17-of-30
passes for 234 yards. He also threw a seven-yard TD to Clifton McNeil
in the final period at the 9:04 mark to narrow the Atlanta lead to
four. However, the Falcons' defense would make that lead stand, forcing
the Giants to turn the ball over on downs at the Falcons' 40 yard-line
with 1:07 left to play on New York's last serious scoring drive of
the game. The Giants did get the ball back at their own four yard-line
with 0:01 to play, but on the final snap of the game, Tarkenton was
sacked at the one yard-line by defensive tackle Greg Lens.
