1970--Reimaging NFL-AFL Merger: Week 2--Redskins@Vikings
Vikings Rally Past Redskins, 30-17
Minneapolis -- For the second week in a row, the Minnesota Vikings struggled on offense, scoring only 6 points through three quarters. Trailing 17-6, early in the 4th quarter, Minnesota reeled off 24 unanswered points to power past the Washington Redskins 30-17.
The first half was a battle of field goals. Washington had the opportunity to score on their first possession, but Curt Knight hooked a 25-yard field goal attempt. It was Fred Cox who put Minnesota on top when he booted a 33-yard field goal to make it 3-0 with 4:21 left to play in the first half. With under a minute to play in the second quarter, Mike Bass intercepted a Gary Cuozzo pass and returned it to the Vikings' 31. On the final play of the first half, Knight kicked a 38-yard field goal to knot the score 3-3 at the intermission.
Defenses continued to dominate for most of the third period. The teams traded punts until Cox kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:35 to play to give Minnesota the lead again, 6-3. The Redskins used a big play on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff to take their first lead of the game. Running back Larry Brown broke free and galloped 76-yards for a touchdown to make it 10-6, Washington. Then on their next possession, the 'Skins drove 66 yards in five plays and took a 17-6 lead early in the final period on a three-yard TD run by Charlie Harraway.
The Minnesota offense then found some big play magic of their own. Starting at their own 20, the Vikes marched to the Washington 46. From there, Cuozzo dropped back and delivered a scoring bomb to John Henderson to cut into the Redskins' lead to 17-13. The Vikings' defense then stepped up, forcing a pair of fumbles and intercepting a Sonny Jurgensen pass which the Vikings newly awakened offense converted into a pair of touchdowns and a field goal to complete their 24-0 run in the final period.

Sunday, September 27, 1970
Cardinals Power Past Saints, 35-22
New Orleans -- The St. Louis Cardinals rolled-up 376 total yards of offense and scored 21 second-half points to power past the New Orleans Saints, 35-22. It looked like the Cardinals might run away with it early. Saints' quarterback Bill Kilmer tossed two first quarter interceptions. The Cardinals capitalized on the second as Jim Hart connected with John Gilliam on an 18-yard TD pass to take a 7-0 lead. Then, on their next possession, St. Louis drove 62 yards in five plays and scored on Hart's second TD pass of the period, a 22-yarder to tight end Jackie Smith, and led 14-0 as the first quarter ended.
The Saints got back into the game in the second period. After a holding call put the Cardinals back at their own 10, Jim Hart was sacked by Mike Tilleman at the three. On the next play, Hart dropped back to pass again and was tackled in the endzone by Richard Neal. On the first play following the free kick, Kilmer threw a 52-yard TD strike to Dave Parks, making it 14-9 at the half.
The Saints took a 16-14 lead in the third period when Kilmer struck again, this time on a 34-yard pass to Dan Abramowicz. St. Louis responded with a 10-play, 79 yard drive and retook the lead, 21-16, on a two-yard run by MacArthur Lane. Lane would score again on a four-yard run and Johnny Roland would score on a six-yard run to make it 35-16 before Kilmer tossed his third TD pass of the game with 2:12 left to play. Despite Kilmer's three TD passes, he also tossed four interceptions. The Cardinals' ball carriers gained 173 yards on the ground. Lane led the way with 23 carries for 91 yards.
Jackie Smith led the Cardinals with five receptions for 113 yards, while Parks led the Saints, gaining 120 yards on his six catches. The win keeps the Cardinals atop the NFC West at 2-0, while the Saints remain winless.
